Midsize & Super-Midsize Jets: The Workhorses of Private Aviation
Citation X+, Challenger 350, Phenom 300, and Praetor 600—how midsize and super-midsize jets cover most charter trips. Ideal for regional and transcontinental travel without the cost of a large-cabin jet.
Not every trip requires an ultra-long-range jet. For regional hops, transcontinental flights, and day trips between business hubs, midsize and super-midsize jets are the workhorses of private aviation. They offer a stand-up cabin, competitive range, and lower cost per hour than large-cabin aircraft, making them the most commonly chartered types for many routes.
What Defines Midsize & Super-Midsize
Midsize jets typically seat 7–9 passengers, have a cabin you can walk in (often with a belted lavatory), and range from about 2,000 to 3,500 nm. Super-midsize jets are a step up: more cabin space, longer range (often 3,500–4,500 nm), and the ability to connect continents (e.g. New York–London, Los Angeles–New York) in one leg. Both categories are known for efficiency and versatility.
Popular Midsize Jets
Cessna Citation X+: One of the fastest civil aircraft in the world (Mach 0.935). It has transcontinental range and a cabin that’s comfortable for 8–9 passengers. Ideal when speed and a proven platform matter.
Embraer Phenom 300E: A best-seller in the light/midsize segment. Quick climb, good cruise speed, and a cabin that works well for short to medium trips. Often used for regional and day-return flights.
Popular Super-Midsize Jets
Bombardier Challenger 350 & 650: The Challenger 350 is efficient and versatile for regional and continental travel. The Challenger 650 adds range and a wider cabin, often used for transcontinental US flights and shorter international legs.
Embraer Praetor 600: One of the longest-range aircraft in the super-midsize class (4,018 nm). Stand-up cabin and strong performance make it a popular choice for transcontinental and near-international routes.
When to Choose Midsize or Super-Midsize
If your trip is under about 2,500 nm (e.g. New York–Miami, London–Nice, Los Angeles–Seattle), a midsize or super-midsize jet will usually be the right fit. You get a private cabin, flexible scheduling, and often a lower charter cost than a large-cabin or ultra-long-range jet.
